The Morwell Competition
The Division 1, 1996 Season
ended Wednesday night in a battle between the Warriors and their
long standing rivals UBANGI. UBGANGI having a great season where
they seldom lost a set, relying on a strong attack and tight
backcourt coverage that had kept them at the top of the latter
all season.
The Warriors, showing sporadic brilliance through the season, had
come through to the final only after a 5 game struggle in the
semi-final the week before. Warriors were hinging their success
on the best blocking in the competition, and improving form.
The Final
The final saw the two rivals
leaning upon their strengths immediately, UBANGI, led by their
setter captain Grubb, set to the attack using their strong
hitters Brett and all around talent Woody. Warriors were
consistent and improved on their back court coverage, using their
blocking strength to force dumps and allowing the defensive back
line to pick up the spikes and continue the play.
The match continued in hard fought points, both teams working hard to force the ball to the floor. The Warriors began to take a slim lead, helped by exceptional hitting by Warriors Veteran Tony Basten.
Close games were the order for the match, and with determination the Warriors improved their backcourt coverage while UBANGI struggled to find the brilliance of the previous weeks. Strong blocking by UBANGI was not enough to keep the Warriors for edging into the lead and keeping it.
