New Rules
1996 Introduces new rules
In the 1996 season, several rule changes were adopted by the international cummunity. The primary reason given for the changes were:
To extend the play time of rallys. Attempting to
make the game more exciting for spectators.
The 1996 new rules:
A player may serve from any point along
the baseline
Previously a player was required to serve from the position marked as a 3 meter block in the leftmost corner of the playing court
A player may double hit the first
attacking ball over the net
This is a controversial rule that allows double contact with the ball on the serve or any first ball over the net. This rule does not allow prolonged contact with the ball (a lift) it merely allows a second contact with the body on recipt of the ball. The ball cannot "visibly rest in the players hand" at any point.
A player may contact the ball with any
portion of the body.
Previous to this rule, the play could not contact the ball with and portion of the body below the waist. This new rule has seen some remarkable saves in the 1996 season.
