Gerard
& Sandra McLeish own, breed and show Chezdane Great Danes.
In 1980, after having been smitten with a fawn Great Dane named Ch Zelos
Ima Glamagirl (her call name was Sally) whom we had seen being shown
at a sanctioned dog show - Sandra made it her quest to buy this magnificent
bitch, which she did do some months later. This started Sandra and
Gerard in this quest of breeding and maintaining Great Danes as part of
their family and lifestyle.
Sandra does most of the showing, while Gerard has the very important
task of strapper. He makes them what is seen and what wins in the
show ring.
The McLeishes live on a country property about 100 kms (60 miles) from
Melbourne, Victoria on 6 acres, all of which is for the maintenance of
their Dane family.
Sandra and Gerard have since bred many champions, BIG, BIS, BISS, Best
of Breed Royal Show winning Great Danes. (A Royal Show for those
overseas people that don't know are the biggest and most prestigious dog
shows in Australia and have entries in excess of 5,000 exhibits).
Sandra and Gerard have imported and exported Great Danes and exported their males' semen;
a sign of success as breeders.
Sandra and Gerard generally only breed when they need something to replace
the retiring show Danes and only sell their babies to genuine good homes.
They prefer to let show quality Danes go as pets to enrich some deserving
family's life rather than sell pups just to get them into the show
ring.
Chezdane breeds for the betterment of the breed; sometimes
choosing not to breed a bitch rather that settle for a mediocre stud dog.
Sandra and Gerard's Danes have a home for life, and do not get placed out into
pet homes when their show careers are over. Instead they spend retirement
on the couch.
Sandra and Gerard have made some very good and enduring friendships through the Danes
and cannot imagine their lives without these magnificent dogs.
